MISSED COBIA on a fly rod!

This one doesn’t count towards my 50-100 goal but there were lessons were learned.

I spent a full day fishing only for Cobia on the fly. The guides kept catching them on traditional rods (7-8 on the day) but I was only fishing for them on a fly. They were surprised I had no interest in switching out but finally said I had to bring one of them in.

On the fly, I could only get a strong hook up on one fish. It was really hooked but it broke off after about 5-10 minutes into the fight when it got tangled with a line that another fisherman had out.

A reminder to anyone fishing with a friend:

When he has a big fish on the line, get your lines out of the way!

I will be back on the water in April when things warm up and the Cobia show up in numbers again.

I’m looking forward to bringing one of these beasts to the boat with a 9-10 weight. They are powerful fish to catch, and they make a long, deep run.
