Stepping Back to Look at a FAVORITE Lure

Lefty’s Deceiver and Deceivers in General

A Deceiver lure is probably the most basic go to fly. The only other thing that grabs so much attention for a broad variety of fish is a shrimp pattern.

In this blog, I’d I thought, instead of posting another fish I caught, I’d write a little bit and pay some appreciation to this versatile and extremely useful fly. I probably have 6-7 different types in my fly box to match the bait I see in the water.

This is my brown deceiver, and it has worked well for me in SW Florida.

The deceiver has an interesting history. Attributed to Lefty Kreh who created it for stripped bass in the Chesapeake. When he moved to Florida in the 1960’s, he began to create multiple versions of it.

The lure is so recognized that it was made into a US Postal Stamp!

I have a couple of different versions some of which have large eyes in the front which help the lure sink when I want to get it a little bit down in the water column or get it down faster.

You can see I carry a brighter green and even a light blue for different conditions. There are a multiple of varieties, so my suggestion is ask your local fly shop what’s working.
